‘Ruthless’: Nurse breaks down after interaction with Myki inspectors

A Melbourne nurse has been reduced to tears after interacting with a Myki inspector on her way home from work.

The young nurse outlined the ordeal in a video posted to TikTok, describing how the “ruthless” ticket inspectors had fined her for not having proof she was a student while travelling on a concession Myki.

Emma Jane struggled to hold back tears as she straightened her hair and relayed how she felt like she was “going to jail” when being questioned by the ticket inspectors.

“Guys, Myki inspectors are so ruthless,” the TikTok video began.

“I was coming home from working in nursing a shift this afternoon, and I’ve tapped on… And then the Myki guy comes up.”

“I was like ‘Oh, fine. I’ve tapped on.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, it’s concession’. And I’m a student. I study as well as work.”

The young nurse said she tried to explain that she was a university student but didn’t have a student card because she studies.

“And then he sat down, and he was like, ‘So I’m going to have to report you’. And I was like, ‘but I paid the f***ing Myki’. Like, I’ve paid for it, and he doesn’t care,” she said.

The TikTok user said she was reduced to tears and suffering a “panic attack” during the ordeal, but the ticket inspectors didn’t seem to care.

“I’m crying because I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to get fined $300 even though I f***ing tapped on and I didn’t realise. And they literally, they just don’t even care. They just sit there,” she said.

“I’m crying and like, having fucking panic attack, because they’re so scary.

“And they all come around you, and they all come around you, and they do not care. They just stand there. They just like, come all over the top of you.”

Emma said the inspector cautioned her that anything she said could be used against her.

“I was like, oh my god, it feels like I’m going to jail or something,” she said.

The young nurse said the moral of the story was to make sure you have the PTV app on your phone.

“I literally said to him… I don’t have the app because I don’t use Myki enough, and it takes up all my storage, and I’ve got no storage left, so I have to delete every app that I own,” she said, adding that the inspector “just didn’t care”.

University students who study full time are eligible for concession fares on Melbourne’s public transport network. However students must apply for a PTV Tertiary Student ID and carry it on them whenever travelling on a concession Myki.
