SA government proposes ‘world-leading’ laws to ban electoral donations – ABC listen

Political parties in South Australia won’t be able to receive electoral donations or gifts, if a draft bill, introduced by the state Labor Government, gets up. 

The proposed laws would, however, allow new candidates and parties to receive small donations to help them compete against established parties. 

Premier Peter Malinauskas concedes the legislation could be subject to High Court challenges, but insists its necessary to restore trust in democracy.  

ABC NewsRadio’s Sarah Dingle spoke with Simon Holmes a Court, the Convenor of Climate 200, a group that provides political funding to independents who stand for election to advance climate policy.
