Ferguson and Diana reportedly remained friends after the end of their marriages and it has since been revealed the pair were fourth cousins, both descended from William Cavendish, Fourth Duke of Devonshire.

Their mothers, who went to school together, were also best friends, which meant they met as children – although they only became close after reconnecting in 1980, when Fergie was 21 and Diana was 19.
