Scotland fans reignite oldest rivalry in football as they mingle with England supporters

At the England bar, John Hoolahan, 53, a tarmacker from Derby, was among those leading chants against the Scots who said it was “banter” before taking a swipe at Scotland’s national dress.

“They’ve got skirts on,” he said. “They’ll be on the next flight home anyway so we’re not bothered. We’ll be in the final. We’re here to win. “They’re here to drink beer,” he said before then admitting both sets of fans had a shared pastime.

However, others chose to stay out of the action including Jules Sheridan, 49, who sat in the square watching and had brought three Scotland shirts to Germany.

“We’re lassies so not sure if we will win the singing contest. We were talking to a German guy earlier on and he was finding it all a bit funny.

“Every time we see them they are shouting, “Scotland get battered”, Ms Sheridan, from Edinburgh, said laughing. “Do they not have another song?”

Ms Sheridan works for Tommy Sheppard, the SNP politician fighting to keep his seat at the election. “I don’t know if he’s best pleased I’m here and not campaigning.”
