Tasmania’s east coast is bracing for a drenching and damaging winds, with a low-pressure system set to sweep across the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology has put residents in the Furneaux Islands, North East, Central North and parts of the East Coast and Midlands on alert, with a severe weather warning issued today.
Damaging winds, with gusts up to 90km/h, are forecast to hit the north-east tonight and into tomorrow.
“Now is the time to be prepared and carefully monitor conditions in your area,” SES Director Mick Lowe said.
“When driving, ensure you drive to the conditions and be aware that strong winds can bring down trees, branches and other debris on the roads.”
The east coast from St Helens down to Orford is also expected to cop a soaking, with between 30 and 60mm of rain predicted to fall on Monday.
“SES crews are on standby to help if you need it,” Lowe said. “Assistance can be requested by calling 132 500.”
The Bureau expects the winds to ease by Friday evening.
