Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have officially announced that the “Shrek” franchise will return with a fifth film set to open July 1st 2026.

The film will arrive 25 years after the original Shrek hit theaters and 16 years since the fourth film. The trio of key voice talent Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will all return.

Walt Dohrn will direct after working as a writer on the second and third films. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” co-director Brad Ableson will co-direct. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri are producing.

The “Shrek” franchise has stayed alive thanks to spin-offs like 2022’s highly acclaimed sequel “Puss and Boots: The Last Wish” which grossed $481.5 million worldwide.

Also today, New Line has set a September 5th 2025 release date for the fourth and final mainline film in James Wan’s “The Conjuring” franchise.

Michael Chavez, who directed 2021’s third film “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” and the recent “The Nun II,” will direct while David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penned the script.

The series centers on supernatural investigators Ed and Lorrain Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The latest installment will be released on Imax.

As part of the announcement, New Line also confirmed it has moved up Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “Bride!” by one week to September 26th.
