Six of the best: Waller filly Extremely Hardys makes a statement on debut at Canterbury

No two-year-old has won by a bigger space in Sydney this season than debutante Extremely Hardys did at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Extreme Choice was never headed when recording a six-length winning margin in the Dundeel At Arrowfield 2YO Fillies Maiden Plate (1200m).

Extremely Hardys’ romp was the second biggest juvenile city winner in Australia this season behind the 6-1/2 length win of Mishani Lily at Doomben in April.

The biggest two-year-old winning margin in 2023/24 was a nine-length success recorded by the Hayes brothers-trained La Pleine Lune during the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival.

Giga Kick primed for 2024 The Everest … but who will get the ride?

Extremely Hardys was a $300,000 yearling purchase at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller Racing while her dam Killcareless was sold in foal to Cosmic Force less than 60 days ago on the Inglis Digital Online Platform for just $6000.

Waller’s stable spokesman, racing manager and assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth, said she would now be set for a spring campaign.

“She will head out to the paddock now to have three to four weeks off,” Duckworth said.

“We just have to work out what we target.

“The beauty of programming a three-year-old filly is there’s no rush with them anymore.

“You’ve got the Thousand Guineas a month later than it previously was, so you don’t have to rush everything towards the Flight Stakes.

“She’s not overly big but she has an engine.”

Extremely Hardys jumped at $4.60 and defeated the $2.60 favourite Cinsault, from the James Cummings yard, with a further 1-1/4 lengths back to the John Thompson-trained Rowena ($26).

O’Shea-Charlton partnership off to a winning start

The filly was ridden to victory by Tim Clark and it was only the second time this season he’d struck up a winning combination with the Waller stable.

“They told me to ride her like one of Gai’s (Waterhouse) and she did the rest,” Clark said

“A really sharp filly that was most impressive.

“She loved that ground, handled it beautifully and never missed a beat.

“A very straight forward filly.”

The win was Waller’s 17th two-year-old winner of the season.
