Emerging A-grader Jake McIntosh has won Saturday’s stroke competition at Murray Bridge Golf Club on a countback from superstar club champion Aaron Zrim with both players recording a nett 66.
McIntosh’s extraordinary back nine of a one under the card 33 off his 12 handicap gave him a nett 27.0 and a countback win over anyone daring to challenge him.
Stunning golf and there will be more great rounds ahead for this quietly spoken and very modest player.
Zrim had a great round to win the A grade, including another eagle on the par five 12th hole where he hit driver then five iron to about 10 feet before draining the putt.
A-grade runner-up Keith Durham also scored an eagle, but his was on the short par four 15th, where he drove to the edge of the green before chipping in.
Golf shop professional Steve Wilson was beavering away working hard when he looked up and noticed a visitor playing in the competition on the first tee about to play his shot from the yellow social tee.
Quickly grabbing the microphone to alert the player to tee off 15 metres back from the blue competition tee, he was promptly alerted by other players in the group that the visitor was in fact playing his second shot after dribbling his drive not very far.
Oops.
It was the A graders snapping up all of the day’s prizes but C-grader Neil “Dog” Rothe stopped the clean sweep by winning the yabby on the 11th hole with a lovely – or flukey – iron off the tee.
A fine winter’s day awaited shooters this past Saturday at the Deed Rifle Range at Monarto as the Murray Bridge Rifle Club held its annual Cranwell-15 Trophy from a range of 600 metres.
The weather was cold and crisp but skies were clear and the winds were light and consistent, making for some very good scores.
The only possible however, was shot in TR by Andrew Heard, who finished with 75.09, ahead of Robert Paech on 74.08 and Jasamine Irvine on 73.04.
It also saw him claim the Cranwell Trophy with a handicap score of 88.3.
A large F-class field also saw close competition, with five shooters only separated by three points.
Finishing ahead off-rifle was trophy sponsor, John Cranwell with an 89.06.
Close behind him was David McDonald (88.08) and Adrian Conlon (88.06), Gordon Harrison (88.07) and David Newmann (86.04).
However, the Cranwell Trophy, based on handicap, went to David McDonald, whose 99.0 was just enough to finish ahead of Gordon Harrison’s 98.4.
The shoot marked the end of the club’s championship year, with its AGM being held in the afternoon.
The new championship will start next week from the range of 300 metres.
