Star Lion cops shock monster ban as AFL hands down 10 WEEKS worth of suspensions

Must read

Star Lions forward Charlie Cameron headlines the long list of suspensions handed down by the AFL from yesterday’s three matches, with a Suns duo and Giant tagger also punished.

Cameron has been suspended for three weeks, just three months since he remarkably had a one-week sentence downgraded to a fine for his “exemplary record and character”.

Suns duo Alex Davies and Malcolm Rosas Jnr have been suspended for three and one week respectively after head-high hits on Power players during their win, while GWS pocket rocket Toby Bedford has also been hit with a three-week ban

Cameron’s tackle on Eagle Liam Duggan came at the very start of yesterday’s second quarter, where the two-time All-Australian tackled Duggan – who was moving backwards – into the ground, where his head hit the Optus Stadium turf hard.

Duggan was subsequently subbed out with concussion, and will miss this Saturday’s match with St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.

Match Review Officer Michael Christian graded the incident as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

Cameron’s “exemplary record and character” will be no saving grace this time, with his ruling for a tackle on Jake Lever back in Round 5 widely criticised at the time.

Damien Hardwick will be forced into making at least two changes for this weekend, with Davies and Rosas Jnr under the MRO’s microscope for their conduct.

Davies collected Port’s Lachie Jones in the head with a heavy bump while contesting a loose ground ball, which led to the Port defender getting subbed out at quarter time.

His action was – like Cameron deemed as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

His teammate Rosas Jnr bizarrely clipped Power youngster Logan Evans during running play with an elbow – albeit not overly vigorous – to the back of Evans’ head.

Despite the seemingly low impact, the action itself was graded as intentional conduct, low impact and high contact – an action the league will still want to stamp out in its entirety.

The final suspension handed down came the way of Bedford for his tackle on Tigers star Tim Taranto, who came off the ground looked incredibly dazed at the start of the final term at the MCG with his day ended.

The 24-year-old will miss three weeks, with his tackle graded the same as Cameron and Davies.

The Giants have already confirmed they will appeal at the Tribunal.
