State Basketball Centre shoots for the stars

Must read

The State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South is now bigger and better than ever with the completion of the new build at Victoria’s home of basketball.

The $132 million plus project – including $27 million in funding from Knox City Council – was designed to meet the growing popularity and participation of basketball and gymnastics.

The project delivers:

  • 12 new indoor community courts for local basketball competitions for a total of 18 courts
  • Comprehensive training facilities for high-performance basketball including WNBL and NBL teams
  • New state-of-the-art gymnastics facilities
  • New administration facilities to support sports organisations and clubs
  • An outdoor town square space

The project also provides new administration areas for Basketball Victoria, Knox Basketball Inc., Southside Flyers (WNBL), and South East Melbourne Phoenix (NBL).

The broader Knox Regional Sports Park precinct has been boosted by a town square with new food and beverage venues, while road upgrades will improve access to the park for locals and visitors.

The project is also a huge boost for local industry and employment, supporting more than 500 jobs during construction and creating more than 100 new jobs now the expanded centre is up and running.

Development Victoria worked with the builder, ADCO Constructions, to use locally manufactured steel on the build with more than 90 per cent of total construction material coming from right here in Victoria. Additionally, 10 per cent of work hours were delivered by apprentices, trainees and cadets, providing vital experience for young Victorians.

Further works are underway to upgrade the existing original six basketball courts and surrounding admin and function spaces to further service the community and sport, due for completion by mid-2024.
