Steffi Graf humiliated opponent in brutal French Open final with rare scoreline

Iga Switek has invited plenty of Steffi Graf comparisons during the French Open this year as she obliterates some of her opponents.

Swiatek is already a three-time Roland Garros champion and few have been able to rival her on the red clay.

Earlier in the tournament, the Poland star dismantled Anastasia Potapova 6-0 6-0 in just 40 minutes. The second quickest match in Roland Garros history.

The top spot is held by Graf who once humiliated an opponent in just 32 minutes.

Oh and that match just so happened to be the 1988 French Open final where she double bageled Natasha Zvereva.

It was the first double bagel in a Grand Slam final since the 1911 Wimbledon women’s final and perhaps the most damning stat of all was Graf lost just 13 points in the whole match.

Even she was a bit embarrassed by how dominant she was, saying at the time: “One thing I’m sorry about for the public is that it went so fast. I can’t remember a match I won 6-0, 6-0 in a long time, but today, everything went well.”

A crestfallen 17-year-old Zvereva shed some tears during her press conference.

“I wasn’t in the match. It was just a bad game, bad play,” she was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

Graf herself was just 18 at the time, but she was comfortably the best player in tennis at that point.

In 1988, she achieved an unprecedented Golden Calendar Slam, where she won all four major titles and the Olympics in the same year.

“I’m very excited that I achieved this now,” Graf said in the Los Angeles Times. “It is something that not many people after me will achieve, I think. It is amazing.”

No one else has come close to matching that achievement since the German.

She went on to win 22 Grand Slam titles in total and is arguably one of the greatest players ever.

Swiatek herself has only just turned 23 and has a shot at winning her fifth Grand Slam title.

That would put her level with the likes of Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova already.
