A major search is underway to locate a missing surfer at a beach in Western Australia.

Police were alerted to a missing surfer at Surfer’s Point beach in Prevelly, about eight kilometres west of Margaret River and 275 kilometres south-southwest of Perth, about 4.35pm on Friday.

Western Australia Police said the male surfer in his 40s was sighted by another surfer in the water and required assistance.

“However, due to rough conditions he was unable to be helped,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

Police and other emergency services, including local marine rescue and jet skis, will continue to search the area on Saturday.

Several police and emergency services were deployed to the area where a preliminary search of the water and beach area was undertaken.

Surfer’s Point remains closed and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.

No one has been located at this time.
