Sydney hoop lands ride on Stradbroke featherweight

Must read

The champion apprentice will plunge to 49.5kg to ride the three-year-old filly, as he looks to land the first Group 1 of his career.

Stefi Magnetica was an eye catching run behind Bella Nipotina and I Wish I Win in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 a fortnight ago and backed it up in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic on Saturday, where she ran third to Roll On High.

Lloyd famously rode Militarize at the same weight in the Cox Plate last year.

The filly is all but certain to lock away a spot in the 18-horse field, with Racing Queensland officials meeting on Monday to determine a new order of entry.

While the filly is trained out of Sydney with Bjorn Baker, it has a strong Queensland connection through its owners the Cunningham family, who raced Magic Millions winner Storm Boy.

She is also out of a Stradbroke Handicap winner in Mid Summer Music.

Lloyd was an apprentice to Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds before being scouted by Godolphin and subsequently moving to Sydney, where he has been a revelation.

The son of the legendary Jeff Lloyd, Zac now has the opportunity to do something his father never did — win a Stradbroke Handicap.

While he began his career in Brisbane, he has had just one ride at Eagle Farm.

The makeup of the Stradbroke is set to change greatly over the coming days, with the two topweights in I Wish I Win (58.5kg) and Think About It (58kg) to skip the famous handicap.

Australian Bloodstock is also open to deals for their slot in the race, with Dream Hour only managing to run fourth in midweek company last week.

It leaves them open to selling the slot to the connections of any horse looking to get into the race, as long as they are in the top 40 on the order of entry come final acceptances next week.
