Teenage girl dies after falling ill during Louth football match

A teenage girl has died during a Louth School Girls League (LSGC) football game in Termonfeckin, Co Louth, on Thursday evening.

The young player is believed to have fallen ill during the match and was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where she later died.

On Friday, the North Eastern Football League (NEFL) has cancelled all matches scheduled for this weekend, including ladies’ fixtures “as a mark of respect for the untimely passing” of the young girl. 

In a statement on their website, the NEFL offered their condolences to the young girls family and friends.

The LSGC has also suspended all football activities until further notice, extending their thoughts and prayers to the girl’s family and friends.

An Garda Síochána confirmed they were informed of the incident involving a teenage girl who became ill during the game.

In a statement, gardaí said: “Gardaí were notified of an incident where a female (aged in her teens) took ill in Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, on Thursday 11th July 2024. 

“She was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth, where she subsequently passed away.”
