A teenage boy has appeared in court charged over a fatal crash in Perth’s south that killed a young football player and injured five other people.
The 17-year-old boy was allegedly driving a utility on Farrington Road in North Lake on Saturday night when the vehicle crashed, rolled and struck another car.
One of the passengers, an 18-year-old man, died at the scene.
The driver and two other male passengers, aged 17 and 18, were taken to hospital with injuries.
The two people in the other vehicle, a 26-year old man and a 27-year old woman, were also injured.
The driver appeared in court via telephone from hospital, facing six offences including one count of dangerous driving occasioning death.
He was granted bail until September 10, under the condition he doesn’t operate a motor vehicle and does not contact one of the passengers in his car at the time of the accident.
Tributes flow for young footy player
South Fremantle Football Club released a statement on social media on Sunday revealing the accident involved several of its players, including 18-year-old Nick Campo who died.
“We are a club in deep shock, focused upon supporting our players, staff and their families in these tragic circumstances,” the statement read.
Cockburn Junior Football Club also paid tribute as well as the Railways Football Club in Kalgoorlie.
“Nick was a popular friend to many at Railways,” the statement read.
“A life full of promise taken way too soon.”
Nick Campo was also a successful young cricketer, with the Fremantle District Cricket Club describing him as an “incredibly popular and well-loved Port Boy, who had such a bright and exciting future ahead of him.”
“Everyone here at the Fremantle Cricket Club wish to pass on our deep felt and most sincere condolences to the Campo family and we offer unconditional support to the entire Port family at this sad time.”
