Texas Tech basketball transfers who didn’t live up to the hype

Must read

The Texas Tech basketball program has a long history of benefitting from the transfer portal. However, not every player that has come to Lubbock via that talent acquisition method has been a home run. In fact, many have been strikeouts.

Recently, we looked at five transfers that positively impacted the program despite being on campus for just one season. Today, we flip the coin and look back on five former Red Raiders who didn’t live up to the hype that accompanied their arrival via the portal.

When Texas Tech brought Sardaar Calhoun to campus from Florida State, there was a belief that he could be the type of sharpshooter that fans love. After all, the year prior (2020-21), he shot 39.7% from deep.

However, the Red Raiders got almost nothing out of Calhoun in 2021-22. In fact, after eight games, he was no longer on the team.

Calhoun saw only 8.0 minutes per game during his time as a Red Raider. He shot only 23 field goals and made just eight.

Additionally, he was just 6-18 (.333) as a three-point shooter. That was far from what Tech hoped it was going to get from him.

After leaving the program in the first semester of the season, he sat out the second before landing at Drake. In 2022-23, his final season of college hoops, Calhoun shot 38.5% from beyond the arc and found a way to average 7.3 points per game for his fourth school (counting the JUCO ranks). Still, he never contributed much as a Red Raider and his is a name most Tech fans have likely forgotten.
