It’s hard to fathom but here we are, at the midway point of the year 2024. Congratulations and I’m sorry.
With that in mind, and an already-juicy six months of incredible video games behind us, we wanted to take a quick (see: very long) look at the rest of the year ahead. Spoiler alert: There are still loads of exciting major video game releases to come in the back half of 2024, especially now that Summer Game Fest season is done and dusted and we know more than ever. If you scroll down, you’ll see what we reckon is a pretty comprehensive list of the heavier hitters on the way, including when they’re dropping, what platforms you can play them on and where to pick up a cheap retail copy.
If you notice anything missing below there’s probably one of a few reasons. This list based entirely on games that are confirmed to be coming in 2024, either with an actual release date or a some kind of a stated window for launch this year (before you come for me about Snake Eater not being on here), and for the most part are “major” titles. Blockbusters, AAA, AA, whatever you want to call them. Rest assured that we haven’t forgotten all of the fantastic indie releases coming this year – we’ll call those out separately in the future.

Games Releasing In July 2024
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail
Release Date: July 2nd

Sure, Dawntrail’s not a new game, but it might as well be as far as Final Fantasy XIV fans seem to consider it. The fervour for this expansion is huge, and it’s easy to see why. A sea-faring journey to a sunny new continent, new character classes, a new playable race and a long-overdue, major graphical update all feature in this massive expansion.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak
Release Date: July 5th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Switch, PC
Another quietly popular series that I’m yet to dive into, The Legend of Heroes (and specifically the Trials sub-series) has quite the passionate following. If it’s anything like Nihon Falcom’s other cult RPG series, Ys, I can understand why. Maybe this will be the one to bring me in. Maybe I’ll decide investing dozens upon dozens of hours into yet another RPG in 2024 is a bad idea. Who knows?
Zenless Zone Zero
Release Date: July 14th
Platforms: PS5, PC, Mobile
Ignoring for a second that the acronym for this title is “ZZZ,” Zenless Zone Zero looks every bit the exciting, flashy action RPG that fans of Genshin Impact would hope for. I always find I jump onto these free-to-play HoYoverse joints early on and then fall off once I’ve had my fill, but I can see myself getting invested in this one if the world and characters are as interesting as they look.
Nobody Wants to Die
Release Date: July 17th (July 18th AEST)
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
A futuristic, neo-noir detective game running on Unreal Engine 5 that echoes the qualities of games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch, and Observer sounds like a winning formula. Nobody Wants to Die will supposedly offer different outcomes and endings based on player choices, and most of all looks like it’s going to have one hell of a compelling world to take in.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
Release Date: July 18th

A44 Games, the folks behind the fantastic Ashen, have supposedly likened Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn to something between the modern God of War games and Elden Ring. I very much like the sound of that. The game promises an open world that reacts to your progress, exciting action RPG combat with both melee weapons and firearms. There’s also a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater-esque scoring system for being especially stylish and acrobatic in combat, which gets an automatic thumbs up from me.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition
Release Date: July 18th
Platforms: Switch
The cheapest pre-order: $47.95 at Amazon
Combining the fun of NES Remix with the speedrunning antics of the historic Nintendo World Championships, this new package will cut together over 150 challenges that pull from bite-sized chunks of retro NES titles like Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Metroid. You’ll even be able to compare your best times with others around the world to prove who’s best at very specific, carefully-curated bits of games from a 40-year-old console.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess
Release Date: July 19th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC
Elden Ring meets Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater not enough of a genre mash? How about a game by Capcom where you fight Japanese “yokai” in tower defence gameplay that our own James told me is like “Pikmin mixed with Fat Princess”? Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess couldn’t be more confounding to witness, but from everything I’ve heard it’s actually a joy to play, so there’s a good chance it stands out as a surprise hit this year.
Earth Defense Force 6
Release Date: July 25th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, PC
Rocket-wielding exosuits. Giant creepy-crawlies. The year 2027. Each as unbelievable as the last, but all featuring in the latest EDF game, which is also being touted as the largest in the history of the series. Hell yeah.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland

I definitely couldn’t have predicted one of my most anticipated games of 2024 being a completely new, side-scrolling Rugrats platformer, but there’s just something about this game that I’m picking up on. Maybe it’s the faithful visuals hitting me with a ton of nostalgia for a childhood classic, or maybe it’s the fact that there’s a whole “8-bit” version of the game layered underneath that you can switch to at any time and even ships on a playable NES cartridge if you want it.

Black Myth: WuKong
Release Date: August 20th
Platforms: PS5, PC
People are really excited about this one, as disappointing as it is to know that the leadership over at Game Science doesn’t exactly inspire faith in the industry. As far as the actual product goes though, expect visually-stunning fights against huge and inventive bosses pulling from Chinese mythology and classic Chinese literature like Journey to the West.
Concord
Release Date: August 23rd
Platforms: PS5, PC
The cheapest pre-order: $57 at Amazon
Just when you thought the world wasn’t ready for another multiplayer 5v5 online shooter starring a roster of memorable misfits in a rolling narrative, along comes another! Concord does look like it has the chops to be a mainstay, at least, with a very Guardians of the Galaxy vibe and the promise of a heap of free live content and new cinematics every week.
Visions of Mana
Release Date: August 29th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC
The cheapest pre-order: $94 at Amazon
Another exciting series revival, Visions of Mana should be a pleasant and incredibly vibey new RPG for series fans and newcomers alike. It’s being developed with all of the hallmarks of the Mana series in mind, while also bringing modern touches and some truly gorgeous visuals to the mix.

Star Wars Outlaws
Release Date: August 30th

The cheapest pre-order: $89 at Amazon
Star Wars fans that also happen to enjoy video games have been eating pretty good recently with the likes of Respawn’s Jedi series, but this new venture from Ubisoft is particularly exciting because it marks what is the first modern “open world” adventure based on the franchise. It’s also got blasters and cute, furry sidekicks. So good things all ’round.

Age of Mythology: Retold

I think I may have come to the party just a bit too late for the likes of Age of Empires or its sequel, but Age of Mythology absolutely had a grip on me back in high school.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

It feels like it’s been gestating for an age now, but STALKER 2 (yeah, I’m not doing all of that punctuation) is finally nearly here. The long-awaited sequel is promising to delivery another massive, non-linear journey through the post-apocalyptic wastes of The Zone, where danger lurks around every corner and every decision you make matters. I’m already shitting myself.
Astro Bot
Release Date: September 6

The cheapest pre-order: $89 at Amazon
Even before getting my hands on it recently, I could have told you that Astro Bot was more than likely going to be a favourite for me this year. After playing it, I’m absolutely convinced of that fact. Team ASOBI is working on something truly special, you can ready more about it in Shannon’s preview and interview, as well as my own piece here.
Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2
Release Date: September 9th

The cheapest pre-order: $99 at Amazon
I never played the original Space Marine (or any of the diverse range of Warhammer video games, to be honest), but it was clearly a fan favourite given the excited reception to a sequel finally arriving this year, over a decade later. It definitely looks like a good time, too. I don’t want to compare it too hard to Gears of War but… yeah, it definitely reminds me of Gears of War. Only more colourful and unserious.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown
Release Date: September 12th

With no new Forza Horizon game on the, err, horizon, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown might just prove to be the next best thing for those looking for a new open-world racing game this year. Set in a “fully recreated” Hong Kong, it’s setting out to “reinvent” the massively multiplayer racing genre with a focus on the passion for cars and player immersion.
Funko Fusion
Release Date: September 13th

What do you get when some of the folks behind the iconic LEGO games get given the reins to an entirely different, and even more license-rich collectible property like Funko Pops? Apparently, something much more violent than you’d think. If you’re down to see your favourite characters from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World shooting at the Five Nights at Freddy’s animatronic abominations or Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs squaring off against the Battlestar Galactica, you’ll find that here.
God of War Ragnarök (PC Release)
Release Date: September 19th (September 20th AEST)

A fantastic sequel to a fantastic game, brought to more players by a publisher that’s (mostly) done a pretty good job at launching PC ports of its hugely-popular AAA titles. Sounds good to me!
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
Release Date: September 24th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Epic Mickey remains one of my favourite Wii titles, with Disney seemingly giving Warren Spector (of Ultima and Deus Ex fame) a decent amount of creative room to tell a new story with the world’s most beloved cartoon character. It was a great game that largely holds up, and Purple Lamp did some very good work on remastering SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom recently, so I have high hopes here.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP
Release Date: September 25th

Look, maybe this game isn’t one that needed to come back, but maybe RePOP will be the game to finally remind a lot of us (myself included) that Grasshopper Manufacture doesn’t always hit. I don’t know, I’ve never attempted to go back to Lollipop Chainsaw after enjoying it at a time in my life when I though straight, white man was all my fate had in store. I’m excited to find out the exact degree to which I was wrong about that.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Ignoring for a second that Zelda’s new stint at being the hero of her own series has given her a magic furniture-arranging wand over a sick sword and shield, this game looks absolutely wonderful. The abilities that Zelda does have seem ripe for some very exciting puzzles and combat situations and most of all I’m just happy that bestie is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
REYNATIS

This is one for the TWEWY tragics and everyone who still laments the loss of Final Fantasy Versus 13 or wishes that Verum Rex was a real game. It’s got the style, the neon-soaked Shibuya streets, flashy and fast-paced combat. A criminal over-abundance of belts and zippers. Everything you could ask for.

Silent Hill 2

It feels like the remake of Silent Hill 2 has been coming for decades (obviously it’d be weird if we were waiting for the remake for longer than the original has been out, but you get me). Bloober Team is yet to prove that it has the chops to handle something as revered as Silent Hill 2, but what we’ve seen of it so far looks somewhat promising. I think?
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero

Budokai is back, baby! Bringing it back to the days of thrilling battles between the most powerful beings in the world, before the rise of eSports when some fighters were simply broken and you fought your mates to pick them, Sparking! Zero is looking to be the unserious Dragon Ball fighting game that we’ve needed for years now.

I genuinely have no idea what’s going on this game or what to expect from it, which is about the clearest indication I can think of that it’s going to be another ATLUS banger. Despite the classically-inspired setting and tale of monarchs and magic, it somehow looks like it’s going to be 100% more stylish than the recent Persona games. So, yeah. Sign me up.
Super Mario Party Jamboree

You’ve just been bumped to second place at the final post as the game hands your spouse two bonus Stars. One of them was for moving the most spaces, an act entirely reliant on chance. Bullshit. Bitter, you lash out at them by revisiting a private conflict from earlier in the day, in front of your friends. The room goes silent, you partner included, and the mood shifts dramatically from that point on. You become increasingly aware of your own self-inflicted ostracisation. Some awkward small talk is made as your friends attempt to salvage the situation, but no more games are played. They say goodbye to only one of you as they leave. There are 110 new mini-games, the most there’s every been in a Mario Party title!
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

I’m not sure why they’re trying a sixth time when it feels like they got it right pretty early on, but everyone loves Black Ops, right? This one’s going to have a new movement system that the studio wants you to believe is so revolutionary it’ll rewire your brain, and I don’t think a AAA video game developer has ever steered us wrong before.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

What’s the only possible way that SEGA could have improved on the worlds-colliding 2D and 3D Sonic the Hedgehog romp that was Sonic Generations? Adding in the Ultimate Life Form, obviously! Shadow the Hedgehog arrives in this jazzed-up redo of one of the better-received “modern” Sonic titles, complete with his own brand-new story campaign and new gameplay features.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure

Max is back! This brand-new entry in the beloved Life is Strange series is going back to its origins with Max Caulfield once again in the leading role. This time, a sudden tragedy causes her powers to morph into new, allowing her to traverse between alternate realities – just the thing she’s going to need to solve a murder mystery in her timeline and outright prevent it in another.

The boys are back! The Marios, brother, are off on a brand-new adventure in a series that’s been dormant for far too long and finally seeing a home on Switch just as the console starts to wrap up its life cycle. I’m so bloody excited for this, you guys.
Empire of the Ants

Remember SimAnt? No? Well, you’ve missed out big time. I’m never a huge fan of actual bugs in my actual vicinity, but seeing them in documentaries or represented in video games, with their weird bodies and unknowable thoughts, always manages to fascinate me. Empire of the Ants is a strategy game where you command ants (naturally) and build your colony, form alliances with other bugs, defend your turf and more amid a stunning, photorealistic depiction of life at ground level. I cannot wait.
Slitterhead
Release Date: November 8th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC
At first I wasn’t sure what to expect from Slitterhead, the new game from Silent Hill, Siren and Gravity Rush creator, Keiichiro Toyama. After all, where do you go from there? Turns out, the answer is basically to do all of that at once, and the game looks appropriately bonkers and all the better for it. Everything about the most recent trailer makes me want this game in my hands now, but thankfully the wait isn’t too long.
Avowed
Release Date: November 12th

Desperately waiting for your Elder Scrolls 6 fix? Can I tempt you with a high fantasy role-playing game made by the same folks who did Fallout: New Vegas and then went on to recapture the formula in an entirely original universe with The Outer Worlds? To be fair to Obsidian, Avowed absolutely looks like its own thing, and the comparisons to Bethesda’s RPGs are probably unfair, but honestly this game somehow gives me a lot of Oblivion feels and I really need that right now.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Release Date: November 1st

The cheapest pre-order: $84.95 at Amazon
One of the most widely-beloved entries in the sorely underappreciated Dragon Quest series is getting a new chance to shine with a HD-2D makeover that pays respect to the original while looking absolutely gorgeous. It’ll naturally feature plenty of gameplay improvements and added quality-of-life features too, hopefully making it the definitive way to play this classic.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Release Date: November 15th

The cheapest pre-order: $89 at Amazon
Assassin’s Creed is finally heading to feudal Japan and it only took multiple other developers to beat them to the punch. Lateness aside, it’s clear that this game is going to benefit from launching well into this generation – the world looks huge, gorgeous and teeming with life and players will have two distinct and exciting protagonists to choose from with their own unique style of play.

LEGO Horizon Adventures

A Horizon game, on my Nintendo Switch? It’s actually happening! LEGO Horizon Adventures might be the most unexpected mash-up releasing on the most unexpected spread of platforms, but it also looks like it could be one of the coolest games to launch this year.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
It’s wild to think that this game was announced just a couple of months ago but is due out before the end of the year. The folks at Warhorse look to be putting all of their energy into making this the game they’d envisioned the first time around, and with six years behind them I’ve no doubt they can pull off something pretty compelling.
FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PC
I’ve been waiting for this one, and occasionally coming very close to buying an iPad just to play it, for the longest time now. But no more! Fantasian is coming to consoles and PC after originally being an Apple Arcade exclusive, and in a wonderful full-circle moment Square Enix has swooped in to help Sakaguchi and the Mistwalker team make it happen.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Bioware has a lot to prove with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Its last game, Anthem, was a categorical flop, and Mass Effect: Andromeda before it was considered something of a slap in the face to series fans. Now, not only is it back in another of its beloved franchises, but it’s following in the wake of Baldur’s Gate 3 absolutely eating every other RPGs lunch when it comes to rich worlds, characters and branching storytelling – things that Bioware’s games are typically built on. It’ll be interesting to see if The Veilguard can do enough to please Dragon Age fans while also forging a strong enough identity to stand out everywhere else.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Yeah, this one’s another stretch as far as actually releasing in 2024 goes, but gosh does it look beautiful. Konami seems to be going the full fan-service route and simply layering incredibly-detailed, Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals straight onto the bones of the original Metal Gear Solid 3 with identical cutscene direction and level layouts, along with some fundamental improvements to things like controls and camera. I reckon they’ve made the right choices, here.
Unknown 9: Awakening
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
I’m always a little wary of new video game projects that go all-in on the cross-media thing, with studios talking about comics, movies, TV, books and all manner of other bits before they’ve launched the actual game. I’m not quite sure if Reflector Entertainment is positioning the Unknown 9 game as the core product here, but the sentiment remains. After seeing a fair amount of the game in a hands-off demo though, I’m actually quite keen to give it a go. There’s definitely a “AA” quality to it, but it’s got some neat ideas and Haroon (played by The Witcher’s Anya Chalotra) seems like a unique and compelling lead.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

MachineGames. Indiana Jones. Not the combo I’d have picked but after what we’ve seen of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle so far, I’m willing to bet it’s a match made in heaven. After all, the tongue-in-cheek tone and Nazi-punishing of the modern Wolfenstein games is a prime starting point for a fresh Indy story. Add in superb-looking first person adventuring and shooting and all the iconic imagery of the films and you’ve got a hell of a concoction. Very keen.
Until Dawn
Release Date: TBA 2024

What’s better than the hit PS4 interactive horror experience, Until Dawn? A PS5 and PC version of the same game! Well, you’d assume it’s better. At any rate, they’re doing it, and it’s being rebuilt and enhanced using Unreal Engine 5 which I’ve heard is a pretty good number of Unreal Engines. It’ll have gameplay improvements too, and new content, so good news all ’round.
The Wolf Among Us 2
Release Date: TBA 2024

I know I said at the top of this whole endeavour that I was only going to include games that I was sure would release in 2024, and I know that The Wolf Among Us 2 still seems like it’s never coming out, but I’ve included it here in an effort to manifest a launch this year. Please, I need this.
Ys X: Nordics
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Switch, PC
If you’re an RPG fan and you’re yet to give the Ys series a go, I reckon you’re missing out. They’re not big-budget blockbusters on the level of a Final Fantasy, or even scratching the mid-range alongside something like the Tales series, but they’re almost always a great time with memorable characters and fun combat.
The Casting of Frank Stone
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
The Casting of Frank Stone is poised to be a thrilling narrative game set in the world of the hit horror multiplayer title, imbuing the franchise with Supermassive’s trademark style where players’ every decision matters in shaping the story, its outcome and the fate of its characters. It’ll be an exciting one for Dead by Daylight fans especially, offering an all-new look at the wider world of the franchise in a completely original story.
Tales of the Shire
Release Date: TBA 2024

I know, I know, there are too many “cosy” games these days. But this one has hobbits! And actually looks rather lovely with some novel ideas and shockingly in-depth cooking and farming mechanics. Nobody can say they’ve seen or read LotR and doesn’t want to visit the Shire.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

Pretty neat that we’re getting both a Deck Nine-produced Life is Strange game and a wholly new title from the DON’T NOD Life is Strange team in the same year. I honestly don’t know a whole lot about this one yet but it definitely has the right vibes.
Metro Awakening
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: PS VR2, Meta Quest, PC VR
The idea of a Metro game in VR actually makes so much sense, and will no doubt scare the shit out of me at multiple points. PS VR2 owners also need a win, so hopefully this one turns out to be an entry worthy of the excellent mainline titles.
Batman: Arkham Shadow
Release Date: TBA 2024
Platforms: Meta Quest
A new Batman: Arkham game? So soon after the disaster that was Suicide Squad?? You’d better believe it. Only, this one’s not being made by Rocksteady and it’s not a “proper” Arkham game at all. Rather, it’s a Meta Quest 3 VR exclusive set within the Arkhamverse that pits Bats against rats. Rats!
Suikoden I&II HD Remaster
Release Date: TBA 2024
