To celebrate 50 years of the Golf, VW has just presented the latest stage of evolution of its bestseller, the mid-cycle update of the eighth generation Golf.

The VW icon, with over 37 million units produced, now enters a new chapter in its long history, with a new, fully developed infotainment system, a state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid engine, and a new design.

Thus, the new Golf and the new Golf Variant are distinguished by changes in the front. The visual features that define the updated Golf are the illuminated Volkswagen logo, for the first time in European markets, and the newly designed LED headlights. The top-of-the-range IQ.Light LED matrix headlights have a new high-performance main beam with a range of up to 500 meters. The IQ.Light3D LED taillights on both body versions also received a new design.

In the interior, the highlight is the recently developed intuitive infotainment system (MIB4) with an independent touchscreen display. It features illuminated touch bars at the base for optimized ergonomics in controlling temperature and volume.

Note also the instrument panel with a 10.2″ screen, as well as the improved multifunction steering wheel and the new voice assistant IDA, which can be used not only to control functions such as the air conditioning system, phone, or navigation system, but also to access online information from all possible areas – from weather forecasts to general knowledge questions.

The renewed Golf also brings a set of new driving assistance systems, with emphasis on the debut of Park Assist Plus and Park Assist Pro, which facilitate maneuvers to enter and exit parking spaces using a smartphone, as well as the new 360-degree Aerial View.

In terms of engines, the renewed Golf has some news, namely in terms of plug-in hybrid mechanics that now have a new 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with variable geometry, combined with an electric motor, which is powered by a new battery

with a useful capacity of 19.7 kWh (predecessor: 10.6 kWh), which allows a 100% electric mode range of about 140 km. The battery can now be charged in a domestic wallbox and other AC charging points of 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW).

In addition to the plug-in hybrid variant, the Golf also features 48V mild-hybrid units, which in the case of the eHybrid version have 204 hp, while the sportier GTE version develops 272 hp. In both mild-hybrid versions, power is transferred to the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

In addition to the electrified variants, the revamped Golf still offers combustion engines, with the entry-level version equipped with a 1.5 TSI engine with 115 hp and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Still on gasoline, the highlight is the GTI version equipped with a 2.0 TSI engine with 265 hp coupled to a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The versions with Diesel engine are both equipped with the well-known 2.0 TDI engine, with two power levels: 115 hp with a six-speed manual gearbox, and 150 hp with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. As for prices, VW has already announced that the renewed Golf range starts at €28,620.
