This Aussie restaurant’s steak has been named third best in the WORLD

Margaret restaurant in Sydney serves the world’s third best steak, according to the judges of the acclaimed World Best Steaks list for 2024.

Margaret, named after chef Neil Perry’s late mother, commands a handsome street corner done in sleek glass windows in the ritzy Sydney enclave of Double Bay. 

The warm and sumptuous interiors are an inviting precursor to flawless modern, produce-driven Australia fine dining, where the steak prices range from $59 to $250.

Margaret’s 1kg CopperTree 36 Month Grass-Fed and woodfired hereford ribeye, served with a simple wedge of lemon and grilled to your liking has won praise from hundreds.

‘We had this a couple of weeks ago and I have to say it was the best steak I have ever had,’ raved one happy diner.

Tender, rich and full of flavour from the fat, bone and fragrant smoke of the wood fire, this steak deserves to be called one of the world’s best. 

Those preferring Australian wagyu to grass fed rib eye, can have theirs served with a choice of dreamy bearnaise, anchovy butter, piquant chimichurri or tarragon salsa.

One lucky diner who sampled Margaret’s steak said: ‘OMG there are not enough superlatives to describe today’s lunch experience.’

World’s second best steak went to Spain’s Bodega El Capricho

The number one winner of best steak in the world went to Buenos Aries’ Parrilla Don Juilio in Argentina, and second place went to Spain’s Bodega El Capricho. 

Grass fed beef means that cows are fed on a natural diet of grass.

Wagyu beef, which originates in Japan and involves certain feeding, breeding and fattening methods, is traditionally from a grain-fed cow and can have a heavier flavour compared to grass fed.

The menu at Margaret goes far beyond beef, with a variety of stunning dishes including freshly shucked oysters, an elegant and exotic Ben’s coral trout with XO Butter and a rich and creamy swiss Brown, oyster and field mushroom pie with Jerusalem artichoke puree that is a dreamy main for vegetarians, or anyone.

Memorable steak side dishes include a deep tasting cauliflower and gruyère Gratin and wentworth’s twice cooked crisp and creamy potatoes.

Desserts include Sam and Neil’s wedding cake (a creamy, boozy union of bourbon, sponge and meringue), a rhubarb pavlova, banoffee pie and an ethereal crème caramel with Malfroy’s Gold Blue Mountains honey.

Wine and cocktails are what you would expect at such an upscale venue, with a negroni for the ages a popular crowd favourite.

While some have said the main dining room can get a little crowded and noisy, there is more relaxed, outdoor seating that allows diners to enjoy people watching and the frequent sports cars driving by.

Perry’s more casual sister restaurant, Next Door, sits directly adjacent to Margaret on Guilfoyle Avenue, with a slightly more casual vibe and snacks and drinks available throughout the day.

Margaret is at 30-36 Bay St, Double Bay.

It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, open 6pm – 11pm on Wednesdays, 12pm – 11p, Thursday – Saturday and 12pm – 10pm Sunday. 

Margaret has also been awarded Good Food Guide’s Restaurant of the year 2024.
