Australians have woken to record icy conditions, with temperatures plunging across the east coast.
A slow-moving low-pressure system moving across parts of Australia’s east has brought freezing temperatures to Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT.

In Sydney and Melbourne, the mercury dipped to 6.5 degrees and 1.4 degrees respectively today, marking the coldest morning of the year.

Even Queenslanders weren’t spared from the cold with the outback town of Tambo dropping to -5.6 degrees and Canungra at -0.3 degrees.
“A Tasman Low has directed icy southerly winds over eastern Australia for several days and a high-pressure system has moved in behind it causing temperatures to plummet overnight with clear skies,” Weatherzone said.
In Tasmania, Smithton dropped to its lowest temperature on record with a minimum of -4.5 degrees.
Over in Victoria, the rural town of Sheoks shivered through its coldest June morning in 29 years, with a minimum of -2 degrees.

Weatherzone said minimum temperatures in the southern capitals’ are expected to remain cool through the weekend and into next week.
