He is arguably Australia’s most famous movie director.

But social media star Georgia Godworth claims she had no idea of that when she interviewed him in the streets of Sydney.

Godworth, whose TikTok handle is @god_worthy, was conducting a vox pop about relationships in Newtown, when she stopped a striking-looking older man in a shiny green shirt to ask him a few questions.

She seemed a little surprised when he asked her to make sure she got his best angle — and Baz Luhrmann seemed to quickly realise that she had no idea who he was.

Regardless, he went along with her line of questioning, giving some rather long-winded answers about his marriage (to award-winning costume designer Catherine Martin).

“So, are you single? Dating? Relationship?” Godworth began.

“Ah … no,” Luhrmann said. “I’m married.”

“Oh, you’re married! Beautiful, beautiful,” she responded, with Luhrmann throwing a quizzical look at the camera.

“The person I’m married to and I, we found our own really genuine, authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be,” Luhrmann said, as Godworth side-eyed the camera.

“Marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, it’s about advertising to other people that you love and care as to what the DEALIO is,” he continued, really getting into the swing of things.

“My own general philosophy is, if you care about someone and they’re your friend, but they fall in love with someone else or they like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance.”

“I hear you,” Godworth said, before asking him if he was involved in open relationships or made the occasional booty call.

“Let me think about that, I’m not sure what that means,” Luhrmann replied.

“Look, okay, so what is the point of the conversation we’re having?” he added, after Godworth began talking about her own sexual experiences.

“We’re just talking about dating,” she said.

“Beautiful chatting with you. Been a pleasure, been a pleasure,” she added, shaking his hand before complimenting him on his jacket.

“I usually don’t do interviews, but you know what, happy to be a part of yours!” he said, clearly bemused by the whole situation.

When she shared the video, Godworth captioned the encounter: “Guys, I had no idea this was Baz Luhrmann.”

Her followers were shocked that she didn’t recognise one of Australia’s most famous directors.

“This is really embarrassing for you,” one person wrote.

“How do you not know him, or his legendary wife Catherine Martin?”

“The way he’s like, uggg, I’m Baz Luhrmann, I’m married”, said another.

“Please tell me you’re joking and you absolutely knew who this was,” begged a third.

“I genuinely had no idea,” Godworth wrote back.

One disgruntled follower said she shouldn’t be working “in media” if she didn’t recognise the “genius” she was interviewing.

Others cut the TikToker some slack, seeing the humour in the situation.

“I didn’t know what he looked like until now but know who he is!” one person admitted.

“Most of his work is behind the camera and (as he said in this video) he didn’t usually do interviews.”

“To be fair, you can know who someone is and not recognise them,” another said.

Others loved the fact Luhrmann was concerned with angles and lighting, and Godworth didn’t realise why.

“There he is telling you where to put the light and camera angle,” one person said.

“I love how you’re side-eyeing him, changing the camera angle, while he’s just an Oscar-nominated director.”

Luhrmann, 61, is best known for movies such as Elvis, Australia, Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby and Romeo + Juliet.

Catherine Martin, 59, has designed the costumes for all his films.

The pair has been married since 1997.
