Socceroos legend Tim Cahill‘s son Shae has had his contract terminated by the Brisbane Roar as the youngster’s bid to follow in his famous father’s footsteps takes a huge blow. Cahill, 19, joined Ross Aloisi’s Brisbane Roar in September last year on a multi-year deal from Everton, after spending four years at the top football academy in England.
The midfielder notched three assists in nine games for Everton in the English Premier League’s under-18 competition last season and reportedly told his father that he wanted to return to Australia to play in the first team. But things didn’t go to plan for Cahill, who struggled to crack the Roar’s A-League side under new coach Ben Cahn, who took over from Aloisi in January.
There were high hopes for Cahill after he signed with the Roar. The youngster made his A-League debut at age 18 off the bench against Western Sydney Wanderers in Round 6 but he failed to impress.
Cahill only managed one more appearance for the Roar as a substitute where he again failed to find the back of the net or register an assist. He then played the majority of his one season at Brisbane for the Young Roar in the NPL. And on Friday, Brisbane announced that his contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

Brisbane held Cahill in high regard and said his arrival in September was the start of an exciting era ahead for the club. “We are pleased to announce the signing of Shae Cahill from Everton’s world-class academy,” Roar chief executive Kaz Patafta said in September.
“Securing such a promising young midfielder is a testament to our club’s new vision of integrating youthful talent into our squad and first-team environment. Shae’s addition promises an exciting era ahead for the Roar family.”

But unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan. Cahill still has plenty of time on his side and is now an unrestricted free agent. It is unknown whether he will look to secure another deal in Australia or move overseas.
His father Tim Cahill retired in 2019 as the Socceroos’ leading goalscorer, with 50 goals in 108 appearances for the national side. Cahill also incredibly scored at three consecutive World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018). The attacking midfielder-turned-striker scored an incredible 169 goals in 683 club games, plying his trade for the majority of his career at Everton before joining Melbourne City in 2016 where he scored 11 goals in 28 A-League matches across two seasons.
