Looking for Sunday’s Connections hints and answers? You can find them here:
Hey, everyone! Whether it’s back to reality for you or you’re enjoying an extended weekend (or if neither of those applies to you), I hope you have a most wonderful start to your week. It’s unofficially summer now, after all!
Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers are coming right up.
How To Play Connections
In Connections, you’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like horror movie franchises, a type of verb or rappers.
There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the hardest one to deduce. The purple group often involves wordplay, so bear that in mind.
Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.
If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!
Today’s Connections answers are…
- Yellow group — agency in decision making (CHOICE, SAY, VOICE, VOTE)
- Green group — dog commands (DOWN, HEEL, SHAKE, SPEAK)
- Blue group — kinds of notes (FLAT, NATURAL, QUARTER, WHOLE)
- Purple group — ____ iron (PUMP, STEAM, TIRE, WAFFLE)
My mini streak of three perfect games is over, but I’m up to six straight wins overall. I got caught out by a couple of red herrings at first, but I recovered well enough to secure the win.
My first guess was FLAT, TIRE, WAFFLE and STEAM — obviously all types of irons — and I was one away from having a completed group. Instead of trying to figure out the outlier and which word to replace with PUMP, I shifted my attention elsewhere with a guess of SAY, SPEAK, VOICE and VOTE. Nope, no dice there either but again I was one word away from a correct answer.
I then took a gamble, figuring that FLAT was the most likely “iron” word to fit another group and sure enough, I was right. The same held true for switching out SPEAK for CHOICE. After that, I deduced the greens, leaving me with the blues for the win.
That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the solution for Tuesday’s game if you need them.
P.S. Boygenius were one of the biggest music success stories of last year, but my favorite song of theirs (and one of my all-time favorites, actually) is from an EP they put out in 2018. I hadn’t listened to “Souvenir” in a while until Apple Music added the track to its terrific Sunday Morning playlist. I was very happy to hear it.
I don’t think I’ll ever get a tattoo of any song lyrics, but if I were to, it might have to be “When you cut a hole into my skull / Do you hate what you see? / Like I do.” Beautiful stuff.
