ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1089 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, June 12th

It’s the 1,090th Wordle which means that we have just 10 more before we’re on Wordle #1100 and then eleven more after that we get Wordle #1111. We won’t get another four-digit Wordle with all the same numbers for another 1,111 Wordles (just over 3 years) when we reach Wordle #2222. In three years it will be 2027 and I’ll be getting ready to turn 46, my daughter will be 20 and my son will be nearing 17. All of that sounds very old. Much too old. Let’s think of something less terrifying.

For instance, today is Thor’s Day which can mean only one thing: Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I gave you a bit of a tricky puzzle.

The Puzzle: You enter a room and are given 8 marbles. All look identical, but 1 weighs slightly more than the other 7, so slightly that you cannot tell which is heavier just by holding them. You are also given a balance scale that you can use to weigh the marbles, but it can only be used twice. How do you determine which marble is the heavy one?

The Answer: You separate the marbles into a group of 6 and a group of 2. You weigh marbles 1-3 on one side of the scale and 4-6 on the other. If they’re even, you set them aside and weigh marble 7 on one side and 8 on the other. You will find which one is the heavier at this point.

If the marbles in group 1-3 or group 4-6 are heavier, you remove those and take the heavier batch, weighing just two of the three remaining marbles. If those are even, your final remaining marble is the heaviest. If they aren’t even, you can tell which of the two on the balance scale is heaviest. Voila presto!

Alright, let’s Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

SPIRE just popped into my head and I typed it into the grid. Not terrible, with 78 words remaining, but just 1 yellow box to show for it. BONUS cut that number down to 5 and I snagged a second yellow box.

My third guess was NASTY and while it filled up almost every box in yellow, it took me a fourth to get ANGST, which makes me feel nasty with some bonus angst thrown in on top. Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and the Wordle Bot beat me by one, so that’s -1 point. Lame.

How To Play Competitive Wordle

Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.

If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “angst” is derived from the German word “Angst,” which means “fear” or “anxiety.” The German term itself has roots in the Old High German word “angust,” which also means “fear” or “distress.” This, in turn, comes from the Proto-Germanic “*angustiz,” which is related to the Latin word “angustia,” meaning “narrowness” or “distress.”

The term “angst” was introduced into English in the mid-19th century and has come to denote a deep, existential dread or anxiety, often used in the context of existentialist philosophy.
