Travel chaos as fog prevents landing at major airport

People expecting to fly into Brisbane have ended up in other cities due to thick fog preventing landing at the airport.

Ten flights have been diverted on Friday morning, with planes landing at Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Sydney instead of the Queensland capital.

“Thick fog is temporarily preventing aircraft from landing at Brisbane Airport,” the airport posted on Facebook.

“Seven flights have been diverted to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Sydney.”

Airport authorities reported the fog was “rapidly clearing” about 9am but warned of “residual impacts due to earlier diversions”.

Five planes meant to land in Brisbane were diverted to the Gold Coast, three went to Sydney, while Cairns and the Sunshine Coast accommodated one landing each.

Some aircraft were able to land while the fog was heavy, and all scheduled departures from domestic and international terminals went ahead.

Other planes were forced in holding patterns as pilots waited “for conditions to improve”, the airport posted.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported visibility at the airport had decreased to just 50m at one point on Friday morning.

The authority has also warned of the fog causing “dangerous” road conditions, “mainly through the inner, southern and western” areas of Brisbane.

It said visibility “should begin to improve over the coming hour as fog begins to lift”.
