Two police officers are facing assault charges after an elderly man was hospitalised with multiple injuries after an interaction with the officers.

A police statement said the two male officers, a senior constable and a constable, responded to reports of a domestic incident in a home at Campbell Street in Picton at around 8.45pm on January 21 of this year.

A 92-year-old man received significant injuries including a fracture to his right elbow and significant bruising to his head and arms as a direct result of his interaction with the officers, police allege.

Police have been called to the Picton home on multiple occasions by the 92-year-old’s wife, who suffers from dementia. She has made “numerous” reports about being attacked and assaulted, which police had determined were not true, a police source not authorised to speak publicly said.

The elderly man was admitted to hospital.

An internal investigation was conducted and the two officers were served court attendance notices on Wednesday.

The senior constable was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, while the constable was charged with the same offence as well as an additional charge of assault.

Both officers will be suspended with pay, a police statement said.

More to come.
