Two women have died following a desperate attempt from emergency crews to save them after they went missing in the ocean at a popular Sydney beach.
Emergency services rushed to Cape Solander, Kurnell, in Sydney’s south about 4.30pm on Monday in response to reports three women had disappeared after being swept from rocks into the ocean.
One woman managed to leave the water by climbing onto rocks before being assisted by members of the public, according to New South Wales Police.
The search continued for the other two women with three rescue helicopters understood to have helped with efforts.
The two women were eventually located by PolAir helicopters, and pulled from the water unconscious.
They were taken back to shore where paramedics and a Toll Helicopter doctor performed CPR, however they tragically could not be revived.
The women have not yet been formally identified.
A police investigation into the incident has commenced, but no suspicious circumstances have been identified so far.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The woman who survived is understood to have been taken to St George Hospital with minor injuries.
Paramedics also had to treat bystanders, who had helped with the rescue, with hypothermia at the scene.
