The 2024 Paris Olympics wave is all around. With the “values of friendship, respect, and excellence,” the Olympics fever is not just limited to the day of the event. There’s also the mementos and relics that come with this once-in-a-four-year global sports fiesta. This includes the Olympic ‘pictogram’ hats for the game of golf, especially the famous Team USA edition of the accessory.
Launched by the New Era Cap Company, these 9Twenty caps come in two varieties and offer a range of colors. The Boxing Gray 9TWENTY Adjustable Cap is what made its way to social media. This cap “features an embroidered United States Olympic Team logo at the front panels with a sports pictogram at the right-wear side, a gray under visor, and an adjustable D-Ring closure at the rear.”
It comes in one size and also offers variants in red and navy colors. It retails for an affordable merchandise price of $27.99. The other variant offered is a Golf 9FORTY A-Frame Snapback Cap. This version comes in khaki, navy, and gray colors. It features “an embroidered United States Olympic Team logo at the front panels with a sports pictogram at the right-wear side, a gray under visor, and a snapback closure at the rear.” It retails for a slightly more expensive sum of $31.99.

Fans, however, did not seem to be satisfied with the design of this golf cap. While some called it unworthy of its price, others questioned its aesthetics and expressed their dissatisfaction. Some of the fans even drew a relationship with Patrick Cantlay’s no-hat silent protest in their sarcastic critique. But what did the fans exactly have to say?

There seemed to be a clear consensus within the golf world when it came to the look of this new Olympic accessory. One user deemed it, “Ugly,” whereas, another user called the design, “Very boring.” The golf world came in almost unison to question the design of this newly launched head accessory for its almost plain aesthetics. Similarly, the Sun Day Red was also heavily criticized for its designs and prices by the fans.
One disappointed golf fan wrote, “As a former Executive…I hope they didn’t have to pay for them. My granddaughter could have come up with this in an hour,” mocking the simplistic design of the caps. They even criticized the product and said that even a child could design it in less than an hour. The fan also questioned the price of the product and hoped no one paid for it as they deemed it unworthy of the sum.
Yet another user on X quickly drew a unique Patrick Cantlay connection, and said, “Cantlay doesn’t need one he plays better without one.” This reaction sarcastically drew a line between Cantlay and the no-hats silent protest he conducted at the Ryder Cup last year for the no-pay policy of the event. While not a part of the Olympic men’s USA team, the fan jokingly made an indirect hit on how Cantlay would better enjoy the event without a hat.

A fashion critic and golf fan also pointed out, “Those are pretty hideous nobody on Tour wears that “dad” style/fit hat,” questioning how pros usually do not wear such old-fashioned and basic designs in their on-course ensembles. They also called the design hideous and deemed it suitable as a dad fit.
All in all, the G=golf circle united in criticizing the newly launched golf Paris Olympics merchandise. What do you think?
