Ultimate $17m Sports Hub approved for Perth suburb

The City of Wanneroo council has voted unanimously to build a sports hub in one stage instead of two, which will delay the construction start time but save $1.3 million.

The sports hub will complement the construction of a community hub in the Wanneroo Recreation Centre Precinct on Scenic Drive.

The council had been recommended to build the sports hub facility in two stages, with the first stage completed with existing funding and the second to follow once more funding was secured.

Under new administration recommendations, and to save $1.3 million, the council will construct the $17.1 million sports hub in one stage and write to the State and Federal governments to secure $35m for the overall development of the sports and community hubs.

“Ultimately, should the city be unable to secure additional external funding, there is a risk that the city may need to meet the existing shortfall. If that were the case, council would have the option to decide not to proceed with the project at that stage,” a council report said.

The sports hub is set to include two indoor basketball courts which can also be used as eight badminton courts, a calisthenics room, boxing room, changerooms, kitchen, meeting room and an outdoor soccer pitch.

About 80 per cent of the responses received during public feedback the proposed concept design for the sports hub supported it.

The existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre was built in 1971. City surveys have found the facility does not meet the needs of the existing user groups and local community.
