Ulverstone Golf Club secures $495,000 grant for irrigation upgrade

The Ulverstone Golf Club has been given a $495,000 grant to upgrade its “dilapidated” irrigation infrastructure, ensuring the course remains in top condition for the next generation of golfers.

The investment comes as part of the Tasmanian Government’s $10 million Active Sporting Community Infrastructure Grants program, which aims to encourage clubs around the state to make essential upgrades.

Minister for Sport Felix Ellis said north-west coast club is an iconic one that is “going from strength to strength”.

“They are looking to invest significant funds in new irrigation infrastructure so that they can future-proof their club and our government’s been very proud to support them,” he said.

“It’s a story that we’re seeing right around the state, from the north-west to the north-east, down south and in rural parts right across Tasmania, investing in the infrastructure that our clubs need so that they can keep attracting participants.”

Club Captain Sarah Johnstone said the grant will prevent the club from passing on extra costs to members.

“We have so many casual participants here at the club,” she said. “We’re looking at a total cost of around $650,000 for this new irrigation system.”

“It’s going to improve the overall turf quality of the course, so we’re going to see better accessibility, playability and just a better overall enjoyment playing here at Ulverstone.”

“The current system that’s in place … it’s quite dilapidated. It breaks down every year and this has just been a big cost every year for at least the last five years.”

The project is expected to take around six months and Johnstone hopes most of the work will be completed by spring or summer this year.
