WA news LIVE: Hail, wild weather lashes Perth’s coastal suburbs

Parts of Perth have copped some wild weather overnight, including hail, thunderstorms and wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres an hour.

Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman Jess Lingard told Radio 6PR coastal suburbs in the Perth metropolitan area, and Bunbury, were the most impacted.

“Behind this cold front that moved through yesterday is a low-pressure system, and we’re seeing a very vigorous westerly to southwesterly air stream in and around that system, so very strong winds, and obviously those coastal places are going to cop it straight off the waters,” she said.

“We will see winds and the shower and storms evening, but that won’t be until this afternoon.”

More than 130 people have called the SES for assistance since yesterday afternoon – mostly from Rockingham, Safety Bay, Baldivis and Waikiki.

There are power outages in a number of suburbs, including Rockingham, Spearwood, East Victoria Park, Lancelin, Camillo, Duncraig, Coogee and Fremantle.

Bunbury has had 71 millimetres of rain since 9am Tuesday, while Perth has had 25 millimetres.

A severe weather warning remains in place for Perth and surrounding regions.

Shane Archer, south of Perth, said the wild weather had caused part of his roof to collapse, with water flooding his home.

“You would swear you’re in England … it’s cyclone alley down here,” he said.

And there’s not much relief in sight, with a front coming through at the weekend expected to be even wetter.
