A apartment resident who has just gotten new upstairs neighbours after four years of peace and quiet has written a note pleading with them to quieten down after a certain time.
They explain on Reddit’s ‘Apartment Living’ thread “the dreaded finally happened: kids.”
“They have 2, but only one is old enough to be walking,” they write. “And she also likes to run and jump.”
The apartment resident says she understands kids make noise but says it continues as late as 10-11.30pm, right above their bedroom.

They have tried using a white noise machine to drown out the sound but said the “loud booms are really getting on my nerves and make it really hard to fall asleep.”
They decided to leave a note alongside some cookies to take the sting out of their noise complaint, sharing a copy of the note for feedback from Redditors.
“Does this note seem ok? I want to be clear but not aggressive or rude,” they add.

The note reads: “Hi Neighbour! I live below you in #102. Welcome to the building!
“I’m sure by now you can tell that the walls are pretty thin,” they continued. “I hate to complain, but at night I can hear a lot of running/jumping. It makes it very hard to sleep.
“Can you please try and keep thee running + jumping down after 9/10pm (per the lease, quiet hours are 10pm – 7am).
“I would be so grateful! Thank you.”
“I never have the guts to directly tell people that they are making too much noise during quiet hours,” one Redditer said. “I always file a complaint with management even if the problem gets solved for a week then starts up again.

“I think your note is a reasonable statement and request, but you never know if they are the types of people that say, ‘kids are going to be kids.’ But I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try end communicate that. If the note doesn’t work, then definitely try talking to the office about the noise concerns after 10 pm.”
Another Redditer shared a positive experience of their own.
“I’ve only left a note one time, and that was to ask my neighbours if they could avoid running their dishwasher at night because it was on my bedroom wall (kitchen against a bedroom wall when the walls are already crazy thin is a horrendous planning choice). Luckily, they were lovely and left a note apologising! It was definitely nerve-wracking though,” they shared.
Not everyone has had a positive result.
“In 1980 I got my first apartment, there was a large family who lived upstairs. They would let their kids roller skate over my bedroom. I knocked on the door and politely asked if they could stop, she said, no and slammed the door,” they wrote.
“That’s a very nice note. I just got into an argument on here with someone who thinks that bc they work night shift they are entitled to running the vacuum at 2am,” another Redditer said.
“It’s nice to see reasonable ppl here.”
A property manager also on the thread commented: “THIS. IS. EXCELLENT! It should be pinned at the top of this thread! It is neither unreasonable nor overbearing. I hope it is received in the spirit it it is intended. Let us know! (BTW I’m a property manager. I wish my tenants handled it this well!).”
