QT is expected to be dominated by the immigration crisis which is plaguing Labor, he opposition repeating calls for the resignation of the Home Affairs and Immigration ministers amid shocking reports about freed immigration detainees.
This week, a string of child rapists were added to the long list of woes for Immigration Minister Andrew Giles after it was revealed they were permitted to stay under his direction.
On top of this, it has been revealed at least 28 of the 153 detainees freed by the 2023 NZYQ ruling have reoffended since the High Court determination in November.
Nationals Senator Matt Canavan described the situation as a “complete and utter shambles” during an interview with Sky News Australia on Tuesday.
Mr Canavan claimed the 153 detainees were released “without any due diligence” or consideration about the seriousness of crimes they had committed.
“There’s only two options here,” Mr Canavan said.
“Either the government had done that due diligence and then decided to release these hardened criminals anyway.
“Or they just hadn’t done the work and had no idea who they were releasing into our streets.
“Either way, the ministers involved here, both of them, Clare Oneill and Andrew Giles, should go.”
When questioned about the paedophiles and rapists who have been permitted to stay in Australia under Mr Giles’ Direction 99, the Nationals Senator said it was “shocking”.
Direction 99 has stipulated the Administrative Appeals Tribunal must give greater tolerance to foreign offenders with “ties to Australia”.
