WHO’s Fashion Team Puts 6 Bestselling Jeans To The Test – WHO

Must read

Shopping for jeans can be overwhelming, time-consuming and not high on anyone’s to-do list. Yet they are a piece of clothing that is inherently a staple in everyone’s wardrobe and worn 90 per cent of the time- insert our society’s obsession with jeans-and-a-nice-top outfits! However, finding ‘the one’ can be a process.

Often we’re influenced by our friends and family on what they deem as ‘the best jeans ever’ or perhaps through social media’s viral style or a celebrity favourite, but with all that influence we can be left just as confused with no new jeans to show for it. In the name of research, WHO’s Fashion Editor, Aimee and Fashion Writer, Holly tried the bestselling styles that have had cult status over the years to see if they are all that cracked up to be. Are they for everyone? Do they cater to the tall girlies? We help decipher these denim favourites.

Cotton On Loose Straight Jeans, $59.99 at Cotton On

Made with 30% recycled cotton and offered up to a size 24, it’s no wonder this style is a bestseller. Available in 8 colours with a snug waist and loose straight leg, it ticks the ‘trending now’ box and is under $100.

“I’m usually an 8 but sizing up to a 10 really did the trick to get a more relaxed, low-waisted look. However thanks to the softness of the denim, you can create two styles with the addition of a belt. So, if I wanted my outfit to feel more elevated, I’d belt them higher on the waist. So #girlmath says, two for the price of one!” – Aimee, Fashion Editor

Neuw Nico Straight Denim Jeans, $179.95 at Neuw Denim

Neuw’s jeans peaked in popularity following the rise of the mum jean years ago, and A-listers like Margot Robbie wearing them on date nights. The Nico Straight is a refined, polished version that includes a high waist, fitted seat and straight leg, made in their comfort denim that isn’t too rigid or stretchy. You know something has achieved cult status when it gets produced in 20 different colours!

“The Nico Straight is one of my all-time favourites. I love its simple yet polished look that hits at the perfect spot on my waist to give an hourglass look. They skim my thighs just right, and are straight from the knee down, giving a more elongated look to my legs. It’s an all-rounder everyone should try.” – Aimee, Fashion Editor

Topshop Editor Jean, $100 at ASOS

This vintage-inspired style is hailed as one of the best jeans for all body types, and comes in a variety of washes, lengths and fits. A mainstay with the fashion set for years, including celebrities like Kendall Jenner, it’s the perfect high waist pair that’s slim fitting yet straight at the ankle.

I can understand the obsession with this style. It nips in at the waist, fits through the seat and then loosens slightly through the leg, grazing the ankle at just the right spot. On me, however, I felt they were a little too cropped. They work with flat shoes, but I felt there was too much of a gap when paired with boots or heels, shortening my leg. I also felt that the button fly could be a little bulky too.” – Holly, Fashion Writer

Levis 501 Jeans, $159.95 at Levis

Arguably the most well-known pair of jeans, Levi’s 501 were created in 1873 and are still popular today. A firm celeb fave, there’s now a variety of washes and cuts of the 501. But the original, complete with a straight cut, button fly and mid-rise waist, remains the bestseller.

“My trusty pair of 501s have seen me through the years and many different outfits thanks to their versatility. The trick is to try on a range of sizes to find your desired fit, but since you can choose your waist and length (or have them altered) it makes life easier. Due to their rigid denim fabrication it’s best to avoid machine washing and gently hand soak when needed.” – Holly, Fashion Writer

Cos Arch Jean, $135 at COS

A favourite amongst fashionistas, these 100 per cent recycled cotton jeans are available in a wide range of colours. Great for both day and night, they’re a quick and easy solution when you’re not sure what to wear!

This high street brand has definitely hit the spot with these jeans. My normal size fits perfectly, and the shape of the tapered hem is very flattering. They’re the perfect balance between a straight leg and barrel cut, meaning they’re on the wider side but not so much that it’s overwhelming. This is such a great all-rounder, so if you’re on the hunt for a new pair, pick these. There are 13 colours to choose from and I’d recommend the dark blue wash with brown stitching because they look the most expensive.” – Aimee, Fashion Editor

Zara Marine Jean, $79.95 at Zara

Dubbed one of the most affordable yet
good quality jeans in the market, the Marine jeans are a soft, high-waisted style with front pockets. It’s a signature jean for the brand which they continue to restock with plenty of sizes and colours.

“Zara must be doing something right because this style keeps coming back every season in more colourways than ever! I wanted to try a wide-leg design in soft denim that would be comfortable – and this didn’t disappoint. The rugged hem is perfect for wearing with flats and the high waist suits a tucked-in tee. The only downside for me are the front pockets as I’d prefer them to be a little more functional.” – Holly, Fashion Writer
