Why Sunday’s clash against Essendon is the biggest game in Gold Coast’s history

Must read

SEN host David King has Gold Coast in his crosshairs ahead of their Sunday afternoon clash with Essendon at People First Stadium.

The Suns have seemingly improved in Damien Hardwick’s first season in charge as they hold a 6-5 win-loss record through 11 games.

Their opponents in Essendon though have been even more impressive as they sit outright second at 8-2-1.

As the Suns have never played finals in their brief history, King thinks that Sunday’s game could be the biggest in the club’s history as a win would put them well and truly on the path to breaking their September duck.

While the Suns have won their last four at home, they’ve come against West Coast, Hawthorn, Adelaide and Richmond.

King wants to see them do it against a genuine top side of the competition.

“I’m putting a whole football club in my crosshairs,” King said on SEN Breakfast.

“The Gold Coast Suns, it is time to win the biggest of home and away games in your brief history at home this weekend against the Bombers.

“They’ve been in really good form at home, they’ve won their last four up there.

“They’ve made some significant inroads as a football club with their new coach on board and a different system. They’ve had an elevated performance from this midfield and they’re now playing a game that you can identify as threatening on all fronts.

“I just need to see the complete performance against a good-quality opposition at home.

“This is the biggest home and away game that they’ve had in their brief history, in my opinion.”

King is tipping the Suns to play finals footy if they win and he thinks they have the tools to compete with the best sides in the competition.

After they went down to Carlton 102-73 at Marvel Stadium last Saturday, King wants to see them regain their best form up on the Gold Coast.

“If they win this, they are (a finals team),” King said.

“These are the sorts of games that separate sides and I just feel like they’ve got all the tools.

“We’ve been down this path before. We’ve had these conversations before. I feel like the coach has got them in a really good space.

“But they let themselves down a little bit last week on the road, which can happen.

“They just need this midfield to get going again and provide a better clearance game than last week.

“But this is huge.”

The bounce for Sunday’s game at People First Stadium is set for 4:00 pm (AEST).
