Why this small Perth band is now on same level as Ed Sheeran

Must read

An up-and-coming Perth band has been gifted something that only the world’s biggest celebrities such as Post Malone, Ed Sheeran and David Beckham are rumoured to own.

Coterie — an insanely talented group of four West Aussie brothers — has been given what many can only dream of, a Nando’s black card.

Rumour has it the Portuguese chicken chain rewards its celebrity customers with a money-can’t-buy loyalty card that gives the owner exclusive benefits.

While Nando’s employees remained hush about the exact perks of the secretive black card, it is believed owners of the card are entitled to free chicken and drinks… for life.

When we heard who was next in line to receive the elusive card, we just had to know more.

The four stars of the indie reggae group, hailed from the coastal suburb of Scarborough, are believed to be the newest members of the elite club.

Tyler, Josh, Brandford and Conrad Fisher revealed they were approached by Nando’s to film a music video after a few employees attended their show and discovered their love for the famous chicken company.

“We’ve been like hectic Nando’s lovers forever,” Tyler told PerthNow. “And we had a crazy thing happen.”

“A couple of the crew from Nando’s came to one of our shows once and they found out that we’re massive Nando’s fans.

“We found out that they were apparently fans of ours. So yeah, we had been eating Nando’s heaps, and then they hit us up and said, ‘let’s make a music video together.’”

The band’s upcoming music video for their song One More Chance, out on July 5, will be filmed at a Nando’s restaurant.

The brothers said the unreleased hit will have a “pretty sick” and “iconic feature on it”.

“It is just like a song about the culture and relationships and we’ve seen plenty of life while sitting in a Nando’s restaurant with all our boys,” said Brandford.

“It’s actually the best spot for first dates.”

Thanks to their collaboration with the much-loved brand, these four Nandos fans will never have a shortage of free chicken.

“I think we might be the first Perth act to get the Nando’s black card,” said Josh.

When questioned on how they felt about having a card that only major stars have been gifted, the brothers laughed.

“Oh, maybe we’re on that level and we’re pretty much the same (as Beyonce Ed Sheeran),” Josh joked.

“And we look like Ed as well.”

The musicians are also bringing out a limited edition Peri Peri sauce that will be available at Nando’s stores across WA.

“Coterie is getting its own hot sauce… extra hot, extra, extra hot, just like Josh,” Tyler laughed.

“We’re pretty much gonna be hosting parties now every week with free chicken and the Nandos cards even work for beers as well so there you go,” Conrad joked.

The brothers are in for a huge year, with the band set to kick off a Europe and UK tour in June. The boys will be performing their sold-out shows abroad for two months.

“We are playing a couple of shows with our mates and we’re doing some big festivals over there as well as our own headline shows. The headline shows are flying,” Brandford said.

“Obviously the festivals and everything are going to be crazy as well.”

To add to their success, Coterie took out the Breakout Artist of the Year award on Thursday night at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards.

“It’s pretty crazy, to be honest,” Tyler said.

“It’s a bit surreal you know… we’re just local boys from West Coast Drive and now we’re flying around the place playing shows.”

The Kiwi brothers — who boast 230,000 monthly listeners on Spotify — released their debut album Coterie in 2022, featuring popular tracks Cool It Down and Killing It Off.

For local fans, the brothers will perform in Perth at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle on June 14 and will be playing their new single live for the first time. Tickets can be purchased here.
