Mercury isn’t the only planet that goes into retrograde, but its change in pace is the most notorious. Astrologers believe that when Mercury goes in retrograde (which happens up to four times a year), people can lose control of everything from communication to planning. Even technology can misbehave. Frequently a time of disorganization and disorder, Mercury’s retrograde is often accompanied by warnings not to initiate new projects or attempt to tick items off your to-do list, including Christmas shopping. Meanwhile, Mars in retrograde can cause widespread feelings of irritation and low energetic vibrations, and has even been known to bring the drama. “You can’t get from A to B to C,” Susan Miller explains of this season. “You can’t even get from A to B.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom. While Miller recommends Christmas shopping in July, she confirms that December will be a good time for reflection. “You just have to be content to do a lot of thinking, looking back, tweaking,” she tells us exclusively, adding that it will be a particularly fabulous time to do a “wrap up” of your year. “It’s a time that actually gives you time to think,” she adds. In particular, it can help to brainstorm all the things that went well in your year, along with those low points you aren’t looking to repeat come January.
And though December will likely be frustrating, the good news is most signs are in the same boat. “We’re all in this together, although Aries and Scorpio will feel it more,” Miller admits. “It happens every two years … it’s normal. It gives you time to take a deep breath and think about things.”
