“I don’t think you need to talk too much about Novak here at Wimbledon. He’s obviously achieved greatness many, many years. So he’s going to be a tough battle.

“I feel like Novak is a lot more constant and solid with his level throughout the whole match.”

The Serbian was repeatedly showered with cries of “Rune,” which he maintained were supposed to serve as boos in a spicy atmosphere at SW19.

And Djokovic, a seven-time champion at Wimbledon, took aim at those cheering Rune and explained why he thought it was “disrespectful”.

“To all the fans that have respect and have stayed here tonight, thank you from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate it,” Djokovic said.

That was rather spicy from Djokovic, who was furious with the fans who repeatedly shouted “Rune”.

It’s unlikely to cool the atmosphere down for the next round though.

“It’s a big day for the Italians, Jannik has looked so good, so far,” Kyrgios tells BBC Sport. “That test against Berrettini has put him in good stead. I think I’ll go with Jannik Sinner, I think it’s a safe bet right now.

I focus on the respectful people, who pay for their ticket, come tonight and love tennis and appreciate the players and the effort the players that they put in.

“I played in a much more hostile environment, trust me, you guys can’t touch me. I’m feeling great on the court, take it day by day. I hit the practice courts tomorrow and analyse this match.”

“I’m very please, I don’t think he’s played close to his bes, to be honest, he lost the first 12 points, it got to him mentally. Waiting all day to come on court, it’s not easy, the tension builds,” says Djokovic.

“I stayed solid. Things could have looked a bit different, but very solid and glad to get through in three sets.”
