Wimbledon Day 2 Predictions
Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Magdalena Frech
Damian:
This is another round one upset alert. Frech is probably at her best on grass with her excellent footwork and groundstrokes that only really get that pace on a slicker court. Haddad Maia hasn’t done anything exceptional in a while, she seems reasonably vulnerable at the moment.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Jordan:
Expect many long rallies between these two fighters. But Haddad Maia is simply more comfortable on grass than Frech. The Brazilian has been quite inconsistent in recent months, but she should still have enough to progress.
Prediction: Haddad Maia in 2
Manuel:
Haddad Maia is clearly the better player of the two overall, but on grass it should be a quite even matchup, which could genuinely go either way, especially considering how Haddad Maia has been struggling recently.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Dalma Galfi vs Mayar Sherif
Damian:
Galfi was great in the qualifying and should enjoy her time here. Sherif loves to have time on that spinny forehand and if the Hungarian directs enough pace there on grass, she might end up receiving a lot of mishits and errors in return.
Prediction: Galfi in 2
Jordan:
Qualifier Galfi will fancy her chances here. Sherif is a true clay-court specialist, who generally struggles a lot on tournaments outside the dirt. Galfi also reached the semifinal in ‘S-Hertogenbosch a few weeks ago. I expect her to reach the second round.
Prediction: Galfi in 2
Manuel:
Sherif is yet to play on grass this year, while Galfi has been playing quite well on the surface, including a great run through qualifying here at Wimbledon. She should be able to advance here.
Prediction: Galfi in 3

Camila Osorio vs Lauren Davis
Damian:
This looks pretty tricky. Osorio is way more used to clay courts and patiently building up points, but maybe she can take that style to grass as well? Well not against anybody, but specifically against Davis who doesn’t have that explosive power to blow you off the court.
Prediction: Osorio in 3
Jordan:
This is a decent draw for Davis against an opponent who plays her best tennis by far on clay. However, Osorio, unlike some clay-court specialists, has a great attitude and always gives it her absolute best on every surface. Davis is in the main draw with a protected ranking and has generally not been playing her best tennis for a while now. Osorio’s intensity might be too much for her, even on the Colombian’s weakest surface.
Prediction: Osorio in 3
Manuel:
It should be a very tight match here, decided by small details, but overall Osorio is the more solid and consistent player so she should have a slight edge here, although it could well go three sets.
Prediction: Osorio in 3

Danielle Collins vs Clara Tauson
Damian:
Collins is having such a remarkable year, but now we’re onto her weakest surface and weakest Major. She’s still quite dangerous and maybe could have gone very deep in another part of the draw. But facing a talent of Tauson’s caliber? Things won’t come easy to the American here if they will come to her at all.
Prediction: Tauson in 3
Jordan:
These two are among the biggest hitters in the women’s game. Yet, neither is particularly comfortable on grass. Collins’ superb season and the attitude she has been playing with makes me believe that she will adapt to the conditions better to triumph though.
Prediction: Collins in 2
Manuel:
Collins has been having a really good season and is on the cusp of making it to the Top 10. She lost some steam during the clay season, but she seems primed to make a good run here at Wimbledon and should make easy work of this first round.
Prediction: Collins in 2
