Andy Murray gives health update ahead of Wimbledon decision

Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova crashed out of Wimbledon after suffering a shock first-round defeat to unseeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on her return to Centre Court.

Vondrousova, who appeared to be bothered by a hip injury lingering from her retirement in Berlin, becomes the first Wimbledon champion to lose in the opening round in 30 years after a 6-4 6-2 defeat.

Earlier, Andy Murray withdrew from the singles at Wimbledon and will instead make his farewell from SW19 in the doubles alongside brother Jamie. Murray was scheduled to face Tomas Machac this evening but the two-time champion announced on Tuesday morning that he has withdrawn having not made sufficient recovery following an operation on a spinal cyst 10 days ago.

Elsewhere, day two saw Novak Djokovic take to Centre Court after overcoming an injury of his own and he cruised past Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-2 6-2. A mammoth 11 British players will still be in action including Katie Boulter and Jack Draper, the women’s and men’s No 1s, with both seeded for the first time, while world No 1 Iga Swiatek also begins her campaign against former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, in what is a rematch of the 2020 French Open final.

Wimbledon 2024: *Jack Draper 3-4 Elias Ymer

A couple of unforced errors from Draper as he finds the net before Ymer crunches a cross-court forehand for a winner. Draper challenges but it caught plenty of the line.

Both men’s service games have been solid since the early trading of breaks and this is another one well negotiated by the Swede to 15, sealed with a deft volley at the net.

Wimbledon 2024: Jack Draper 3-3 Elias Ymer*

Clever shot by Draper as he puts a forehand back behind Ymer for a clean winner. He’s definitely showing a desire to follow his first serve in and he controls points really well off it. Another solid hold.

Wimbledon 2024: Katie Boulter 7-6 4-3 Tatjana Maria*

Nip-and-tuck out on Court 3 – both are getting chances on each other’s serve but are unable to seal that crucial second-set break.

German player Maria using her slice regularly, with Boulter forced to win a point two or three times over with her destructive forehand!

The British No 1 just two games from victory at this point…

Wimbledon 2024: Jack Draper 1-1 Elias Ymer* – BREAK!

Draper looks to be cruising towards the hold, with a beautiful winner snapped crosscourt, but then attempts a strange tweener from the baseline on 40-15.

It goes long. From there, Draper goes into the net, puts one long, and Ymer takes the break as he meets a poor volley and clicks the winner down the line!

The break goes straight back.

Wimbledon 2024: *Jack Draper 1-0 Elias Ymer – BREAK!

Draper puts his backhand into the net on the opening point, but from there he makes a very confident start, with a lovely drop shot and blasted forehand setting up two early break points. Ymer pushes wide from the baseline and that’s the perfect start!

Wimbledon 2024: Jack Draper vs Elias Ymer

Jack Draper often talks about how big an inspiration Andy Murray has been for him in his young career. In an important moment in the 22-year-old’s development, Draper now takes to Centre Court on the same day as Murray’s singles career at Wimbledon came to an end.

He won the toss but elected to receive.

Wimbledon 2024: Next up – Jack Draper vs Elias Ymer

What an opportunity for Jack Draper as he steps out onto Centre Court, literally filling the footsteps of Andy Murray after the two-time champion’s decision to withdraw earlier.

The British No 1 is seeded at Wimbledon for the first time and is in form after winning the title at Stuttgart and earning his best career win against Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s. He now faces the qualifier Mikael Ymer.

Draper spent last year’s Wimbledon watching on the couch, and said he was inspired by Alcaraz’s victory in the final.

“It was really difficult,” he said. “I obviously didn’t just miss this one. I missed Queen’s, the whole grass. I think I sat on my couch for most of it, just kind of really frustrated, watching all the matches.

“I watched the (Liam) Broady-(Casper) Ruud match, which was amazing to see Broads doing well. I watched the full final, which was hard to watch obviously someone so young winning the title, showing what he’s capable of.

“It really, really motivated me and was actually I think a blessing in disguise because my body wasn’t ready. I don’t think mentally I was ready either to be a top player. It was a good break that I needed to rediscover the fire I needed. From there, I’ve been great.”
