A 49-year-old woman has been charged with murder and a 15-year-old boy has been questioned following the discovery of a woman’s body on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne’s inner west.

A fisherman found the body of a woman, who has not yet been formally identified, near Smithfield Road in Flemington about 10.30am on Sunday. A plastic bag was tied over her head and her body was covered in bruises.

On Tuesday, homicide squad detectives arrested a West Footscray woman and a 15-year-old boy as part of their investigation.

The woman has been charged with one count of murder, and the 15-year-old has been released without charge.

Police believed the pair was known to the deceased woman.

The discovery of the woman’s body came about 90 minutes after a man’s body was found in the water near Saltriver Place in Footscray. Police say an investigation into the man’s death is ongoing but is not being treated as suspicious, and the two deaths are not linked.
