Retro TV footage of a woman who travelled 4,000 miles to marry her ‘childhood sweetheart’ has left X (formerly Twitter) viewers in hysterics after the show nonchalantly revealed who she was to wed.
The clip, taken from the first ever instalment of ITV’s Airline – which aired in 1998 – sees a lady preparing for her daughter’s big day as their family get ready to fly out to the Dominican Republic. Nothing too out of the ordinary you might think – until the show’s narrator reveals the bride-to-be is to marry her cousin.
“Sorry, what?” the X user who posted the video can be heard exclaiming after hearing the shock revelation. She added in a caption: “Watched the very first episode of Airline earlier and couldn’t quite believe my ears.”

Scores more X users appeared to be bewildered by the forthcoming nuptials too, and they didn’t hold back in the comments section below the post. “Watched exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago,” one person said. “Absolutely stunning and it only gets better as it goes on.”
A second wrote in shock: “I thought I heard something completely different at the beginning there…..and then it hit at the end.” A third added: “We need a life update immediately, what do the kids look like.” And a fourth joked: “Even though Charlie Higson is narrating this… it genuinely feels like a Fast Show [90s BBC sketch show] episode.”
In a bid to shed some normality on the situation, meanwhile, another person explained: “Cousin marriage is close to 50% in some communities.” While a second confessed: “My mum’s auntie is married to her first cousin and they have a daughter.”
Fly-on-the-wall show Airline was produced by LWT and detailed daily lives of passengers, ground workers and flight crew members of Britannia Airways’ staff, before switching to EasyJet from series two onwards.
