Olympian Hannah Green will spearhead the Australian challenge at the Women’s PGA Championship 2024 golf tournament, which starts at the Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, USA on Thursday.
Eight Australian golfers, including 2019 Women’s PGA Championship winner Green and Olympian Minjee Lee, will tee off in Seattle. The tournament will be broadcast and live-streamed in Australia.
Hannah Green, who finished fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has been in fine form this year.
Ranked world No. 5, she secured the LA Championship in April, shared 18th at the Founders Cup and followed it up with a runners-up finish at the Mizuho Americas Open, which was eventually won by Olympic champion Nelly Korda of the USA.
Green, a five-time winner on the LPGA Tour, beat the then defending champion Park Sung-hyun of the Republic of Korea to win the 2019 edition. It was her first victory in both a women’s major and the LPGA Tour.
World No. 10 Minjee Lee has never missed the cut at the PGA Championship. She finished T2 in 2022, losing by a single stroke to Chun In-gee of South Korea. Lee finished T9 at the US Open earlier this month.
Both Green and Lee are poised to secure Paris 2024 Olympic quotas in women’s golf for Australia. The PGA Championship is the final tournament before the women’s qualifying window ends on June 24.
The men’s window concluded on June 17 and saw Jason Day and Min Woo Lee, Minjee’s brother, secure Olympic quotas for Australia based on Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR).
Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou finished T10 in 2022. The 23-year-old was tied for 12th at the LPGA Classic.
The 24-year-old Gabriela Ruffels finished T24 at the Women’s PGA Championship last year while Robyn Choi and Hira Naveed will be making their debuts in the competition.
The elite field at Seattle will also includes world No. 1 Nelly Korda of USA, defending Women’s PGA champion Ruoning Yin of the People’s Republic of China, recently-crowned US Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso of Japan, world No. 4 Celine Boutier of France and two-time major winner Lilia Vu of the USA.
