Queen Camilla has offered an update on her husband the King’s health as he received cancer treatment just hours before delivering his 8-minute D-Day speech.
King Charles and Queen Camilla have visited the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London as part of the drama school’s 120th anniversary.
The King is a patron of the centre and was shown around and given a performance by third-year acting students.
He has attended a number of engagements since coming back to work.
Speaking to renowned author Lee Child, the Queen consort said King Charles was “doing fine” but would not “do as he’s told”.
Child told reports Queen Camilla told him the King was “doing fine except he won’t slow down and won’t do as he’s told”, to which he said, “sounds to me like a typical husband”.
Queen Camilla met with chairman of Historic Royal Palaces, Sir Nicholas Coleridge and Vicky Perrin, chief executive of the Queen’s Reading Room.
The Queen consort also met with multiple well-known authors, including Harlan Coben.
It is understood King Charles received cancer treatment at a London hospital on Tuesday, just hours before giving a speech at D-Day commemorations in Portsmouth.
On Wednesday, the King travelled to Portsmouth to deliver an eight-minute speech and meet with veterans before travelling to Normandy.
Queen Camilla has previously given a similar insight into the King’s recovery process when she told guests at a garden party last month the monarch would be “getting better” so long as he “behaved himself”.
The King will attend next weekend’s Trooping the Colour in a carriage after his recent return to public duties, while Princess Kate will remain absent as she is still recovering.
The Duchess of Cambridge, who continues to receive cancer treatment, wrote a letter to the Irish Guards to apologise for her absence.
In the letter posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales’s X account, Kate said she was “proud” of the entire regiment, of which she is Colonel.
“I wanted to write to let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping the Colour,” she wrote.
“I appreciate everyone Trooping this year has been practising for months, and duke and dedicating many hours to ensure their uniforms and drill are immaculate. Being your Colonel remains a great honour, and I am very sorry that I am unable to take the salute at this year’s Colonel Review.
“Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however, I do hope I can represent you all again soon. Please send my very best wishes and good luck to all involved.”
Whilst receiving her treatment, the Princess is understood to be residing between the Wales’ family home, Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, and their country Anmer residence in rural Norfolk.
She remains on an indefinite hiatus from public life while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
Kensington Palace has, however, confirmed Kate is still being briefed on her major royal causes on an intermittent basis amid her treatment, but has declined to reveal when the royal will likely resume her public life.
Princess Kate succeeded her husband as colonel of the regiment in 2022 when he was named colonel of the Welsh Guards.
