Construction will start soon on the City of Windsor’s first cricket pitch at Derwent Park in Forest Glade.
The first phase of construction includes the installation of the cricket pitch, player benches, and irrigation and drainage systems. That stage will cost $1-million and should be ready for cricket players in the spring of 2025.
Following that, the city will move ahead on the next five phases, including a path around the cricket pitch, lighting, batting/practice cages, updates in the parking lot, and a washroom building with two dressing rooms and a storage area.
“The construction of the City of Windsor’s first full-sized cricket pitch is a testament to our dedication to building Windsor’s future by promoting healthy and active living for our residents,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “Through investing in growth, Derwent Park will become a hub for an increasing number of cricket enthusiasts and a beautiful green space for everyone to enjoy.”
All six phases of the project are expected to cost $7.5-million.
“Cricket in Windsor is expanding at a fast pace,” said the treasurer/director of the Windsor Essex Cricket League, Eniyavan Subramanian. “Windsor Essex Cricket League started in 2018 with just six clubs. In 2024, close to 30 clubs participate in the league. While we have interest from additional clubs, we have been unable to accommodate more players as a result of all cricket grounds operating at full capacity.”
Subramanian said the new pitch will address the shortage of playing space.
Located between Forest Glade Drive and the E.C. Row Expressway, Derwent Park spans 32 acres, with ample space for the new cricket pitch and existing scenic trails. The park currently features 650 metres of gravel and natural trails that wind through a woodlot beside and behind College Boreal.
