Some of the world’s leading certification organizations, such as the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Green Key International and Blue Flag International have begun a collaboration to improve cooperation and address better practices to encourage the travel and tourism industry’s sustainability transition.
The collaboration is aligned with the 10-year strategic plan, GAIA 20:30 and includes Biosphere: Instituto de Turismo Responsable; Blue Flag; Ecotourism Australia; Good Travel Seal; Green Globe Certification, Green Key: Foundation for Environmental Education; Green Key Global; TourCert; Travelife for Accommodation; and Travelife for Tour Operators.
These organizations have decades of expertise developing internationally accepted sustainability criteria, certifying over 19,000 of the world’s travel and tourism enterprises, organizations and destinations.
All the sustainability certification organizations are committed to offering transparency, integrity and credibility, and the new collaboration will work to discuss future legislation, reporting standards and the future of sustainable tourism.
The Foundation for Environmental Education runs both Blue Flag and Green Key certification organizations. Green Key certifies hotels, resorts, theme parks and other attractions based upon strict social and sustainability criteria, with over 5,900 Green Key certified properties. Blue Flag, on the other hand, is a voluntary award for beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism boats, boasting over 5,100 Blue Flag awarded places around the world.
