Would-be alleged carjacker punched in head by baby’s grandmother

Must read

A would-be carjacker met his match after he allegedly tried to steal a car with a baby inside.

Spotting the baby’s mother get out of a luxury Range Rover 4WD in Laverton in Melbourne‘s south-west last Friday, the brazen opportunist made his way to the vehicle, allegedly in an attempt to steal it.

What he didn’t realise was that sitting in the back seat with the baby was the infant’s grandmother, 63.

The no-nonsense gran wasn’t going to let anyone steal her daughter’s car or, more importantly, her grandchild.

The would-be thief, who has since been accused by police of allegedly taking part in a wild crime spree in the area, copped a punch in the face from the woman before he fled to a getaway car waiting metres away.

The driver of the getaway vehicle, which was allegedly stolen, was captured on CCTV bopping to rap music as he sped off.

The Range Rover owner had just ducked into the post office to lodge a passport application when her mother was forced to fend off the man while waiting in the car.

Australian Post worker Leanne hailed the quick-thinking grandmother as a ‘hero’.

‘So lucky that grandma was there,’ Leanne told Nine News.

‘Good on her.

‘She was quick thinking and did what she had to do to protect her grandchild.

‘They just don’t care, they think they can do what they like and get away with it.’

Police alleged three men were responsible for a number of armed robberies and aggravated burglaries in the area within three days last week.

A blue Ford Falcon was allegedly stolen from Point Cook a week ago, on June 19, while the victims were at home.

Three men wearing high vis jackets also allegedly stormed another home, stealing jewellery, laptops and bank cards that were later used at a service station.

Three men aged 22, 22 and 21 were later arrested in Broadmeadows, 27km north-east of Laverton.

They were each charged with a string of serious offences including home invasion, assault and making threats to kill.

The men were remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date.
