Penny Wong has clashed with another Senator over whether the government would impose “any consequence” on Israel as its war in Gaza continues.
Ms Wong was being questioned by Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John on the government’s response to Israel’s continued retaliation in Gaza during a Senate Estimates hearing on Monday when the discussion became heated.
“What would it take for the Labor government to finally impose any consequence on the state of Israel for their many breaches of international law,” he said.
However, the Foreign Minister hit back and directed her dissatisfaction squarely at the feet of the Greens.
“Unlike you, we respect the international tribunals, and we recognise that the international rules-based order including the international criminal court and the international court of justice are the appropriate tribunals to make the findings that you now assert,” Ms Wong said.
“And we respect those tribunals and the rule of international law which is why from the beginning … no, don’t shake your head. I do. We do.”
Ms Wong’s answer prompted a strong response from Mr Steele-John, who characterised it as a “breathtaking double standard”.
“Your government is so happy to place sanctions on any other (country),” he continued, before the chair of the committee attempted to intervene and restore order.
Ms Wong returned serve immediately, rebutting the Senator: “You want to talk about double standards?”
“You want to talk about double standards? I tell you what. You know what double standards is? Let me finish on this point. The double standards is you and your party participating in … protests which have become violent and aggressive.
“Greens MPs speaking outside of rallies, which then invade and intimidate people at Labor Party state conferences.”
Mr Steele-John could be heard saying “this is so inappropriate” in response.
“No, what is inappropriate is staff being injured inside at events that Greens MPs speak outside – Greens MPs speak outside an event which is then invaded by protesters. Electorate staff are injured. The MP concerned has written to your leader expressing concern about the role and involvement of Greens MPs, and Mr Bandt has not even replied,” Ms Wong said.
“It is double standards to engage in violent and aggressive protests and incite them and think that you’re doing something about peace.”
A Greens spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au some statements made by Ms Wong on Monday were “incorrect” and reiterated the party supported peaceful protest.
“The protest at an MP’s event Senator Wong refers to was not addressed by a Greens MP; a former Greens candidate spoke. Senator Wong is also not correct in that Mr Bandt has spoken to the Labor MP concerned,” a statement said.
“The Greens support peaceful protest.
“As long as Labor fails to take action against the State of Israel to stop the invasion of Gaza and the occupation of Palestine, including sanctions, the community will continue to be concerned.”
Australia currently applies autonomous sanctions on a range of countries including Myanmar, Zimbabwe, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Iran.
