After serving as an assistant basketball coach for 16 seasons under four of the top boys basketball coaches in the region, Daniel Harmon is finally stepping into the limelight.

Harmon was named boys basketball coach at Southwood by principal Betty Jordan for his first head coaching position.

“Coach Harmon is a Southwood guy through and through,” Jordan said. “He is a Southwood graduate and has 13 years experience on the sidelines at the Ranch. Having someone who knows what it means to be a Cowboy is very important. Being part of many deep playoff runs year in and year out, and also multiple district championships jumped off the page.”

In additional high school basketball news, Northwood has unofficially hired Don Cook to coach the girls program, replacing Will Burton.

Harmon spent last season at Captain Shreve working for Corey Deans, now an assistant at Ruston High, while previously working for Stephen Harshaw, Norm Picou, currently the principal at Red River High, and Eddie Hamilton, who was recently named head coach at Plain Dealing.

“I’m excited. Being able to lead the program I have been part of so long is an honor,” Harmon said.

A 2003 graduate of Southwood, Harmon is taking the helm of a program that graduated nine quality seniors and had Shreveport Times All-City Coach of the Year Brandon Gultery depart for Shreve after a successful 2023-24 campaign. Southwood also graduated Shreveport Times All-City Boys Player of the Year Jeremiah Evans to Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Cowboys were 12-2 in District 1-5A and 25-9 overall advancing to the LHSAA Select Division I semifinals.

“My understanding is that they had a very good junior varsity team last year,” Harmon said.
